The Piccolo-Playing yoke here, growing slowly but surely. This is the long strip off of which the garter rounds grow toward the top to make the neck, and from which the long vertical cables fall to make the body/bodice.
I'm using size 7 needles with Rowan Cashsoft DK in color 516, which is sort of an olive green — a lot more yellow than it looks in this photo. It's got a little bit of loft and is very soft. I love these cashmere blends so much. The pattern calls for a worsted-weight yarn, so I'm just going with the counts for one size bigger, and knitting lengths as my size calls for.
Who knows if I'll get this done, but it sure is pretty and fun to play with. I was trying to do one cable repeat a night when I got into bed, but some nights I just sit there, daft, and then fall over, mumbling. The yoke needs to be over fifty inches long (can't remember exactly how long but it's long). For some reason I can't seem to memorize the cable pattern, which is driving me crazy. I think I'd get a lot more done if I could memorize it. The repeat is 16 rows but it keeps sliding out of my brain, a slither of loose braid — gone.
Did anybody else decide to make this sweater?
I've decided to make the dress...ambitious, I know. I've bought the yarn and have cast on stitches. That's all the farther I've gotten. Sigh.
As I have two sweaters on needles since last year, I'm not attempting this one, but I love it! I'm getting my cable fix by knitting wrist warmers. Instant gratification knitting.
I am planning making the sweater...once I get this scarf done.
I been sort of a lazy knitter lately.
That is going to be so lovely! That sweater and dress are truly gorgeous.
I love both the sweater and the dress. Alas, I don't think there's any way I could get away with the dress. I would need to see the sweater on someone before I could tell if that's a style I could wear or not. I'm looking forward to seeing some completed ones on ravlery. It's very tempting, though.
I'm afraid I have so many scarves, socks and vests on needles that I just can't get to that sweater, I have yarn for two sweaters I downloaded off of Knit and Tonic and still need to get on with those. It looks lovely I haven't learned to do cables yet but a friend said it was easy peasy, we'll see.
I'm working on it too! And like you decided to go with a lighter weight yarn. I kept the same size and needles as the pattern called for. Mine is sport weight on size 8's. You can see my progress on my blog. Good luck with yours. I love the color.
"keeps sliding out of my brain, a slither of loose braid — gone"
Great imagery! :-)
And, beautiful cables.
Hi. I'm new to your blog, just wanted to say that is really pretty and I like the way you photographed it!
That looks like it would make a very cool belt with a couple of tassels on the ends! I say this for types like myself who are flummoxed by sweater directions and measurements...
Wonderful cables, can't wait to see more.
Ah, love your way with words...even "but some nights I just sit there, daft, and then fall over, mumbling."
I know exactly how you feel!
I've been thinking about making the dress, after seeing it posted on your site. (Which is one of my favorite blogs, by the way!)
I'm going on a trip to Webs soon, so may have to make it if I find the right yarn...
Yours looks great!
wow, that's pretty.
I'm in too; couldn't resist, I love the sweater. I'm waiting on my yarn to arrive! Must finish what's on my needles...off to knit:)
Michelle
I have the sweater pattern, now just waiting for the yarn to arrive; mine is a cashmere blend too. I'm anxious about this one; definitely the most complex sweater I've ever tackled!
Michelle
Looks absolutley scrummy. Cables to die for. I think it's a good choice to go with lighter yarn, lest the dress end up weighing about a thirty pounds and dragging about the ankles! A faux pas and a major bummer for sure. xoxoxo!
Wow, I'm so impressed! It looks beautiful. I'm still working on baby pants that are entirely stocking stitch. I thought it would be easy but it's actually just mind-numbing. Perhaps cables are the answer! :)
tempting. very tempting.
That is gorgeous and one of my fav colors!!!!!!!!!
Add me to the list. Have the pattern, etc. Now just need the time. How's the Little girl (Clover)? Growing in leaps and bounds?
You make me want to knit! Inspirational
Oh gosh! That's beautiful. :')
I would ♥so♥ have that dress.
If I were a knitter!
*minordetail* LOL!
Somehow I missed your first post. Thanks for linking back to it! :')
I have a knitting class here for top down sweaters- it'll be the whole month of November! Imagine that. Sigh. How lovely. Then I plan on making this with you. Maybe with all your book-ish details coming up, I'll catch up with you near Christmas. I'm thinking I like the sport weight on 8's idea from Erin above. I'll check out my LYS when I go for my class on Monday. How very very exciting.
Yay! Thank you for always being an inspiration Alicia. It's such a gift that you have.
It's definitely in my queue but I'm not sure when I'll actually get to casting on :) Your cables are looking great!
