Actually had stuff to say today, but can't remember what it was, as head is simmering like chicken stock, throwing off only scuzzy froth and brownish bubbles. Eyeballs feel like hot pinballs. Throat getting ready to turn into excelsior.

Happy to say flair for the dramatic alive and well.

Cold remedies? Does anything actually work?


well, if you didn't make chicken broth sound so yucky in your blog entry, i'd vote for chicken soup. still will, i guess. but i swear by hot toddies and vicks vaporub (makes one feel taken care of) and lots of tv.

I was sick for 2 weeks and nothing seemed to make a dent in the headache except dayquil.

Once you get it, it seems your are stuck until it has its way with you. Best remedy is prevention - get a flu shot in late September/early October, exercize often and sleep about 8 hours a night. Bonus - yearly flu shots seems to cut down on the colds you get, too.

Zinc lozenges--my husbands cold are always less severe than mine and he takes these at the first sign of symptoms. Hope you feel better!

Tom Yum Soup! You want the kind that has little globs of spicy oil floating along on the surface. Something magical happens between the chicken-lemongrass broth and the spices. At the very least it will clear your sinuses!

Alicia dear, rest, lots of fluids in the form of water and hot broth or chicken noodle cup of soup. The most important thing is the rest. Hang out with Clover and a cuddly blanket somewhere and don't do any work.

Similar to lots of the other recommends, but try mixing whisky, garlic, lemon and honey (manuka is especially good) with hot water. I can't drink it (wimp!), but my partner swears by it at the first sign of a cold. He's asthmatic, but it never seems to turn into the full sneezing and wheezing kind of cold if he drinks this once or twice a day.

Also, avoid dairy products like the plague until it's gone. With apologies for hideous-word usage, it aggravates the mucus-ness of a cold.

My mum used to give us a tablespoon of sugar and bourbon to "cut the cold." I can't remember if it actually helped or if it just knocked us out so we could sleep. :-)
Feel better and Happy Thanksgiving!

6 oz boiling water poured over 1 crushed clove of garlic and steep for 10 min. Remove clove of garlic and add 1 tsp. apple cider vinegar (with mother is best-Braggs) and as much raw honey as you need to get it down. Doesn't taste great(kind of like pickle juice), but it works!!!!

This sounds gross, but I swear it really works, and actually tastes pretty good when you're not feeling well. I try to drink this constantly when I start to not feel well, and I swear I never get sick (knock on wood).

- mug of hot water
- spoonful or two of honey or maple syrup (I use honey)
- tablespoon or two of apple cider vinegar
-a couple sprinkles of cayenne pepper

Give yourself permission to just BE for a bit. Sleep lots, whine a little and remember it will go away eventually. Oh, and my Mom used to make cinnamon sugar toast and cut it up into little triangles. I don't know if it was the toast or just knowing that my Mom was doing something special just for me that made me feel a bit better :) Hang in there. I'm sure you're tucked under a nice thick quilt alongside a nice warm puppers sipping some nice warm tea right now..! (Well, YOU'RE sipping the tea, not the know what I mean...)

You poor thing, and right before Thanksgiving. Here's the Irish cure: a shot of The Jameson whisky in a mug, fill with boiling water, add a slice of lemon and a little sugar if you want. Sip. Repeat as necessary. Effects are best when enjoyed after a hot bath and while wearing flannel jammies. Healing wishes!

No fun! I hope you get lots of cuddles and kisses from C.M. I don't know of anything that really helps making a cold go away faster, I do take Emergency, don't know if it works!

A week if you use any of the remedies above, seven days if not...
Sorry you're not feeling well - my take on it is that is Nature's way of telling us that we need to slow down, so plenty of fluids, a soft quilt and some TLC to be as comfortable as possible for the duration. (((Hugs)))

I'm currently fighting the same dang bug. I swear by Zicam gel swabs - but any Zicam preparation would work -, Airborne, hot soup - hot and sour or chicken noodle, hot tea with lemon, rest and a couple days. Hope you feel better soon.

I'm hoping to be better by morning so I can drive to Portland for Thanksgiving with my daughter and s-i-l.

I'm kinda late in the game here, but try adding fresh garlic to whatever you eat, lots of Nyquil, hot tea with lemon and local, raw honey (to rule out any allergies), sleep and rest, and Laurie Colwin's Beef Tea in "Home Cooking."

Alicia, to be well when under an attack of the throat and sinuses I have found this home remedy to be helpful: drop into a glass 1/2 t salt, lemon to cut the flem, asperin to cut pain,and bensol peroxide to make a simple gargle -stir in warm water. The advice to rest as much as possible is good. Let your body fight the infection.

Zinc.. and make a jungle juice - brew up lemons (unwaxed), ginger, garlic and serve hot with local honey (always the best for sinus issues - always local cos of the local pollens) and loads of lemon juice. tastes yucky, but get 5 or so cups a day into you and you're feeling better!

Sure is a lot of Zicam and whiskey love out there!

Myself, I head straight for the Tom Yum. I'm glad it worked for you too.

I make ginger tea! It's amazing!

1. Boil a big pot of water
2. add a medium sized ginger root, peeled and chopped into small pieces. Let simmer for 15 minutes
3. Slice 2 limes in half, squeeze their juices into the pot, then drop them in, rind and all. Let simmer for another 15 minutes.
4. Take the pot off of heat, add about half a jar of honey.

Drink this stuff as often as possible until it's gone. It's very strong, but works every time!
