If you've read this blog for any length of time, I'm sure you know how special and important Kruger's Farm is to Andy and me and to so many other Portlanders (and maybe even to those of you who aren't Portlanders but have been inspired by the many posts you've seen around the blogosphere). This summer, the Krugers' farm-stand permit is up for review. If it is approved, Thursday night concerts and other special events and harvest festivals will continue. But if it is denied (and it could be denied, since a complaint has been filed), a part of what makes Portland so special will be lost.
In Farmer Don's words, Kruger's "goal is to continue to provide the public with a unique farm experience while remaining stewards of the land and good neighbors to the residents of the island." There is a public opportunity to comment until 4:30 p.m. on June 10th, and I wrote a letter this morning to Multnomah County in support of the permit. I know several of our local friends have written, as well. If you are interested in reading more about the permit, have questions, or would like to write in support, please see the farm's web site for more information and further links.
I've taken dozens of photos and written many posts about the farm. Like here and here and here and here and here and here and here. Thursday night concerts are one of my favorite things about living here. It would be heartbreaking to lose them. I really hope the application is approved.
I just saw that on his blog while I was checking to see when these concerts were starting up. I found out about them from your blog and we went a couple times last year and had so much fun! Thanks for spreading the word. I hope they get approved and things can get back on track, (especially now that I have Fridays off work!)
me, too, lovely...I do wonder why anyone would complain and try to take a simple joy away from so many? I'll keep my fingers crossed for you all :)
Thanks so much for spreading the word. We'll definitely be writing. Those Thursday concerts are one of our very favorite things about summer here. I can't imagine summer without them.
That picture looks so inviting and I would surely attend the concerts if they where here in...Colorado. I hope it all works out for Portland. Good luck!
Best of luck! I hope your letter helps to do the trick! :)
How awful for you! I love reading your posts about the outdoor concerts! I always thought if I ever made it to Portland that would sooo be on my to do list!
Best of luck to you in this effort!
Who the HELL complained?
gah... they cannot take it away! I know, I am not a local and I have not been, but since reading your blog, it is a destination on my must see list.
Kruger’s Farm is such a magical place, the perfect way to spend quality time with loved ones. I thoroughly enjoy it and will be extremely saddened if were not able to benefit from it any longer. I’m in shock that anyone would complain…It breaks my heart.
thank you for letting us know. my husband and i almost got married at kruger's farm (oh that tree, so magical) and while we loved the place we did get married at.. we missed the charm and beauty of the farm.
we'll definitley be writing in.
Oh no! I do not live in Portland (though I lust after it daily) and have not been to this farm. But I have seen your posts about it and have always wanted to visit. I'm in love with it without ever having been there!
I really really hope that the permit is approved. I can't imagine who could have possibly complained. I will be writing in, as well.
Thanks for the heads-up!
I have been reading your blog for a few weeks now and just wanted to let you know that it is a blessing to me. My husband's father is the Pastor of Sauvie Island community chuch, and we spent our first half year of marriage living on the island. Currently, my husband is living there and I am stuck in Toronto (Canada) due to some immigration problems. Reading your posts have become a sort of comfort to me, and the photos break my heart (in a good way though). I truly miss Portland and all its people these days, but will hopefully be moving back very soon. Thanks for being a little bit of joy in my life :)

I just wanted to share that I wrote (in favor of Kruger's permit being renewed) and I got the nicest note back from the county...thanking me for my letter and letting me know that it would be included in the comments!
We've never actually gone to the special music stuff, but we love Kruger's and get extra stuff I haven't grown there. I've always thought it was neat that there was a place like that, so close to the city, for families to get away for a country experience. Thanks for the update! Karen
Sent my letter as soon as I got Farmer Don's e-mail! I nearly cried last summer when Farmer Don announced that his neighbor's complaint could mean the end to all the wonderful activities at the farm. It really is a magical haven, and I'm just sure that we'll get the better of that old grouch who complained...See you all at the next concert!
Good luck!!!
I'm a recent follower of your blog and looking back at your links it's clear how much fun has been had at this farm. I hope it all goes ahead this year as usual. More power to the supporters and poop to the grouch!
Really hope they get their permit renewed. I have friends in Portland who have mentioned these concerts too. Wish we had something like that over here in Scotland.
Good luck.

How terrible! I really hope the permit will be approved. I don't think I can do something to help from Holland but I'm crossing my fingers!
My gosh who complained & what the heck did they complain about? Here I thought every one in Portland was cool. ;) I know the market won't be shut down or the concerts. I am crossing my fingers for you.
UMMMMMMMMM STILL LOOKING FORWARD TO THE NEW PRETTY PATCHES TECNIQUE :)
OR HOW TO PUT SQUARE PATCHES TOGETHER ?
THANK U
thanks for the head's up. I'm off to write my letter!
Oh no! I used to live in Portland and loved Kruger Farm! Mmmm and their fresh raspberries.... I'm keeping my fingers crossed that the good times continue! And I'll check out the website right now.
Sent my letter in support of Farmer Don today and Facebook'd his web page for anyone else that wants to do the same! Thanks for your lovely blog.
