Let me just say that it is very disconcerting seeing an enormous backhoe thing (if that's what this thing is) digging an enormous hole a couple of feet away from your house, and coming very close to your very fancy new windows [bites nails bites nails bites nails].
I really did not have a great day yesterday, witnessing all of this. I tried to stay in the back of the house. But then I was informed that they are also digging a hole in the back yard today.
This is not a project that we chose to do; we were informed by the city this summer that we had to disconnect our (oxymoronishly named) party sewer, which was joined with our neighbor's back in 1927 when the houses were built, and reconnect individually into the city line. So it has to be done, but it's still giving me a stomach ache.
All that dirt came out of two giant holes under those orange cones.
Serenity nooooooooow.

Oh, that looks so stressful! Can you leave the house? I would spend the day at the library and try to push all of this out of my mind!
Ugh!! I can imagine how stressful that would be! I hope it's all done soon...
Oh I feel back
I can see how that would be anxiety-producing! I hope all goes well and your yard is back to normal fast!
Oh I couldn't cope! I get so worried about my tree's roots when we've had to dig up our driveway for drainage/run off problems. I don't like ditches!
I would be panicking also. I don't like seeing things like this, especially when it's in your own yard! Deep breath. It will be over soon I hope. :)
I feel your pain! We went through this - wow - can it really have been 2 years ago now? We're in the West Hills-ish area, and yeah - not okay. And - rant ensuing - why the heck do they wait until the rain starts to "dig in" so to speak?! Hello? Ever consider that leaving people with a mud hole(s) the size of an olympic swimming pool is NOT okay?!
Sorry - yeah - flashback there.
So sorry! Think pleasant thoughts - like enjoying your lovely new patio when the weather turns nice tomorrow...
Is a sewer ever really a party? No.
I feel for you! Hopefully this will be over soon.
Breathe, now breathe again. Construction will finish, they will replant your grass (and hopefully not break your pretty new windows ;), you'll do some more work, landscaping -- put in a couple of pretty new plants where they left blank dirt when they were done (nice run on sentence).
Then next spring, when everything is new and shiny and growing, you'll go out into your yard in your robe with a cup of coffee, look around, and sigh and think it was all worth it.
Keep remembering to breathe - I can hardly wait to see what it all turns into.....
p.
Oh you poor, poor thing. What an upheaval. Some days are just not as good as others; I guess we simply have to accept that. Here's to the next few days being extra specially magical to make up for these moments.
I'm sorry that you're so stressed! I have never heard the word "party sewer." That is a delightfully inappropriate name for a joined sewer line! I feel like saying it over and over again, for some reason. Perhaps I should go get more coffee.
I would be torn between staying away from the house (and worrying about it the whole time I was gone), and staying in the house, feeling trapped, wandering from room to room worrying... Unless, of course, Mike Holmes or Scott McGillivray were in charge... then I would definitely stay at home to "observe :)" and not worry in the least!! Sometimes I wish I were Mrs. Holmes!!
oh, i hope they are not going to come anywhere near your beautiful stone quilt from yesterday's post! perhaps you could hurry away to the house in your banner photo and tell them to call you when order has been restored. be strong, little camper.
I am having flash back of the consruction of our alternate septic system a few years back..I was out on the upper deck oh-ing and being frantic and the lead guy finally came up and actually asked me if I couldn't go away for a vacation for a couple of weeks.
It did turn out very nice and I laugh now when I think of what I put him through..I actually asked him if he had to use that heavy backhoe on MY yard. Now I understand his frustration with me.
Really big mess-so much dirt-but remember it will serve you well when it's done. Val
It will be ok - just keep imagining what the future will be like. Nothing is fun about construction but better to do it sooner than later! Keep smiling.
I completely understand how you feel! Last year the old sewer pipe was removed from the alley behind out house. A trench was dug and it came so close to the garage. I tried not to look too. In the end, everything was fine and we were all happy with the neat and tidy job. I hope that you will have a happy result too!
Love,
Susan and Bentley
xxoo
Awww...poor Alicia (& Andy)...:(
does not look like a "fun" project at all!! EEEk!
I could not help but smile on your last comment though, ok a laugh......Serenity NOOOOW! I could hear George's dad yelling it! :) I do truly wish you serenity now! I bet Clover and the kitties have gone into hiding too!
This also seems to be going on in the yard of the house in back of us. It seems to be taking quite some time; the noise drives our poor doggies crazy, and the quiet I need for working at home is awfully hard to come by. Hope they can complete this project for you soon!
Party Sewer sounds like the name of a hip new band. I would give it a listen.
Oh dear, don't watch! Go into another room and knit your heart out:-) I have a sweet giveaway on my blog of a knitted doll :-)
And your gardens are so beautiful! I'm very sorry you have to go through that!
My sympathies. I had a backhoe on my sidewalk (!!!) a few weeks ago. The floor quivered and shaked under my seat. (I'm on the second floor). I could not work!
Think on how much better it is having this done now, than in a *party sewer emergency*... now that would stink!
Ugh is right. How to ignore this? It seems that backhoe is everywhere. I think I would be hiding my head in one of your beautiful quilts and trying to knit under it. Breathe. Breathe. Breathe. I hope it's better soon!
Peace, Angela
Yuck! You need to try to push past the digging and muck and envision what it will all be like when it's finished: Quiet and beautiful!
